The Little Book of Scientific Writing Nancy Fox
I'm glad to have "The Little Book of Scientific Writing" on my shelf. It was fun and I loved the collection of quotes, which includes some I hadn't seen before and will definitely use. The reproductions from Keppler, Copernicus, Darwin and others are nice and remind us that the science writing we do today continues something we've been doing for Centuries: analyzing the world around us and describing those findings within established formats and rules.I was, however, left asking, "who is this book for?" For an established scientist, it's entertaining for its quotes and art, and for trying to do in science what William Strunk did in general composition. But if you already know how to write a paper, you don't need this book. Its use will be as a set of shorthand reminders for advising students on how to construct their manuscripts.
As a book for those students--the people who need the advice and guidance--it fails. The author argues "Condense, condense, condense" but you can over-condense, squeezing out the fruit and leaving just the skin behind. There isn't enough explanation to adequately illustrate and explain the messages to flesh them out and give them meaning to a novice.
There are books that cover the same material with enough depth, and with solid examples, to effectively illustrate the points and which are still short, easy to read, and not very expensive. Day and Gastel "How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper" remains a good start. For a complete guide to assembling a manuscript, from title through data presentation to review and publication, the best book I know is David Schultz's "Eloquent Science: A practical guide to becoming a better writer, speaker, and atmospheric scientist." If you're not an atmospheric scientist, don't let the subtitle put you off, the messages are global and the content is excellent.
So, for $13 in paper, or $5 on Kindle, I definitely recommend this book, but more for novelty than for novel insights.
