TITANIUM: Terra by Terrence Carling is a short science fiction story that revolves around the life of two characters, Fran Fairchild and Mickey Mendez that are being tested by NASA to go to the outer space. The story takes place in the late of the 21st century where Earth has well past its glorious days making NASA sets up a program that tested a potential pair, a male and a female with perfect compatibility to go to outer space to save the humanity. The main idea behind of this book is very simple but it is unique enough to make this book an interesting read. The book may be short but the author describes every scene with the perfect amount of details including the training part that the pair has to endure proving how well through his research are and both of the main characters develop very well. In the beginning of the story, both Fran and Mickey didnt even talk to each other but as the story moves, the readers get to read how their relationship starts to evolve and how both of them has their own problem to handle. The end of this book is satisfying and I think it ends well; the training is all worth it at the end. I am definitely will read the second book and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a sci-fi genre or anyone who would like to give this genre a try since this book is such a short and interesting read.Product details

Titanium Terra by Terrence Carling is a science fiction serial about earth in the latter part of the 21st century. After things aren't going so well on earth, NASA starts an ambitious space program where the elite men and women vie to get to be a part of this program. Each space crew is a pair – a woman and a man who are chosen based on their personalities that complement each other and skills that are comparable.
Since this is a serial type of book, it is extremely short and can be read within just a few minutes. However, that leaves the reader wanting to read more and can look forward to the next in the series.
I would have liked better formatting with more space between paragraphs but that is my only minor complaint. It was fun to read and I look forward to the 2nd one coming out.
The problem with this first installment of this serialized hard sci-fi series is that it wastes too much of its preciously short time on mundane issues rather than focusing on the grander ones that are in play. Yes, I know it is titled “Terra” for a reason and that its purpose is to explain NASA’s training exercises for a manned Mars mission as well as establishing the reasoning behind the push for male/female pairings on the mission, but these and many other groundwork issues could have just as easily been covered once the mission was actually in flight. This approach might have worked well if it simply the opening chapters to a full-length book, but when sold as a serial, there’s just not enough here to make me want to shell out for the next few chapters in the story.
Terrence Carling has created a thrilling opening to his science fiction serial Titanium - Terra. Like a large number of readers, I am intrigued by future space travel and the form and challenges that organizations such has NASA will face. Carling has done his homework and has created a clearly defined description of what future space travel would look like, as well as the type of intense training and challenges future astronauts would have to undertake to qualify for future space exploration. He delves into the personalities of the two main players and creates believable personalities with human frailties who share the same dream of exploration, yet as teammates, struggle with personality issues. I also like the way he has researched the technical aspects of how inter-planetary travel would unfold and how he introduces various physical challenges the astronauts are called upon to deal with. Another aspect of the writer’s talent I appreciate is his ability to integrate interesting supporting personalities into the mix. Mr. Carling’s great imagination is on display in this story line.
As the story progresses, we are never sure of two things can our two astronauts overcome their personality conflicts; and, what exactly will be their space mission, if they qualify.
As part one ends, we are given a hint when the two astronauts are told they qualify and that they should prepare for a voyage to the Moon base. We are also left hanging as part one ends, since their ultimate ambition is a voyage to Mars and we are left wondering what challenges that voyage will entail. What I didn't see coming was the revelation that an earlier expedition to Mars appears to have been lost creating a sense of anticipation and curiosity about what challenges lie ahead for our two main characters.
Once I began to read Titanium - Terra, I couldn't put it down and certainly, if you are a sci-fi fan, this well written and researched story is for you.
I strongly recommend this read.
Mickey and Fran have just been released from their 90 day simulator, and tempers are running a little thin after being cooped up with no one else for that long. Have they ruined their chances for a longer stay on the international space station, maybe even a Mars mission?
Set in the 21st century where NASA is struggling against those who think that resources would be better allocated to shore up the existing industrial structure on Earth, author Terrence Carling sets up a sci fi tale that has a fair amount of reality behind it. The writing style is terse and to the point, much like the scientists, and I actually would have enjoyed a little more drawn out story. However it is an undeniably well researched story and it does leave you wanting more and hoping to jump to the next book in a hurry. It seems like it could be a great sci fi series!
